Colored Noise
How white, pink, and brown noise distribute energy across frequencies in different ways.
Definition#
Colored noise is a continuous random signal shaped to distribute energy across frequencies in a particular way. The color name identifies that distribution.
- White noise has equal power in frequency bands of the same width.
- Pink noise reduces power as frequency rises, giving each octave equal power.
- Brown noise reduces power more quickly as frequency rises, placing more of its energy at lower frequencies.
How Soundwell generates it#
Soundwell provides separate white, pink, and brown noise generators. Color selects which generator is active.
The selected noise passes through a low-pass filter. Brightness sets the filter's cutoff frequency. Resonance emphasizes frequencies near that cutoff.
Output requirements#
Colored noise does not require stereo channel separation. It works through headphones or speakers.
The connected output's frequency range affects which parts of the noise spectrum it can reproduce.
