Brown Noise

How Soundwell generates brown noise and shapes it with Brightness and Resonance.

Definition#

Brown noise is a random signal whose power decreases more quickly as frequency rises than it does in pink noise. This places more of its energy at lower frequencies.

The name refers to Brownian motion, not the color brown.

How Soundwell generates it#

Soundwell uses a Brownian-noise generator when Color is set to Brown. The generated signal passes through a low-pass filter.

Brightness sets the filter's cutoff frequency. Resonance emphasizes frequencies near that cutoff.

Output requirements#

Brown noise does not require stereo channel separation. It works through headphones or speakers.

The connected output's frequency range affects how much of its low-frequency energy it can reproduce.
